Chess Institute of Canada is a non-profit organization with the singular goal to use the game of chess to teach kids essential life skills and improve the world.

We offer learning programs in schools in downtown Toronto, weekend chess clubs and summer camps.

National Chess Camp (one week overnight)

NCC is a partnership of National Music Camp and CIC for children grade 3 to 8 on the shores of Lake Couchiching, 4 to 5 hours of chess a day plus swimming and other sports.

The Chess Institute is working hard to make registering a child for his or her school's chess club as easy as possible. This term we have moved our registration process online so that parents can take advantage of the ease of online registration and payment.

15th Canadian Women's Chess Championship 2011

CIC and Annex Chess Club (ACC) will host the 15th Canadian Women's Chess Championship, Oct. 8-10, 2011! ACC is also hosting these events this fall:

2011 Canadian Open Championship

CIC hosted the 48th Canadian Open Chess Championship at the Westin Harbour Castle hotel, Toronto, Ontario July 9-17, 2011. Our event featured 13 Grandmasters, including winners Walter Arencibia (Cuba), Joel Benjamin (USA) and Dejan Bojkov (Bulgaria); master exhibitions and lectures; and our 2nd annual Children's Day Camp. A gala reception for Canada's Olympiad National and Women's teams, followed by a chess lecture by Grandmaster Mark Bluvshtein, who played board one.

Members of the Chess Institute participated in Nuit Blanche, playing chess on the stage of the Ryerson Theatre and bringing up members of the audience to play blitz chess on a board that activated switches to the music.

Kids Chess Camp at the Canadian Open

The CIC ran a chess camp at this year's Canadian Open Chess tournament, July 12-16. The camp was half the day indoors playing chess and math games, with improv theatre, followed by half the day outdoors on Centre Island.

The students played Grandmasters Merab Gagunashvili and Luke McShane, the latter who went on to win the Canadian Open!
